Western Brook Pond Fjord, Gros Morne National Park, Newfoundland and Labrador

Man:
People are basically dumbstruck. There’s not another
way of saying it. When you’re on a tour boat
and there’s not a sound… They’re just… It’s just… You know you’re
somewhere special. ( ♪♪ ) There’s many ways to experience
Western Brook Pond in Gros Morne National Park. You can take a short
walk to the dock, about 40 minutes. You can also do
a two-hour tour boat run. Or you can hike, either a day trip
or an overnight trip up the eastern end of the gulch. And of course, you get
that wonderful photo at the end of the hike and you have all the bragging
rights that comes with it. Hey, golly! We made it! In terms of this hike
being accessible to everyone, you need a moderate to
high degree of fitness and you need a certain amount
of mental determination. You will be climbing over rocks, crawling under rocks,
stepping over branches, stepping over fallen down trees, and there’s some sections
that are extremely steep. That being said,
it is still accessible, it’s just challenging. Anybody else need
to fill up a
water bottle? For a lot of people, this is the most
difficult undertaking they will ever do
in their lives, and I’ve never once
heard anybody say
it wasn’t worth it. (Laughter) Give him a kiss, he might
turn into a princess. One of my clients,
10 years ago, tore a picture out of
the “Globe and Mail”, stuck it on the inside of
his office door and said, “On the day I retire,
this is where I’m going.” And he did. The fact that you can get there, the fact that it’s
tough to get there, the fact that not everybody’s
willing to go there for that photo, makes it special. A few years ago, I worked
in a little grey box, on a little grey chair,
tapping little grey keys. There’s grey granite here, but believe me, it’s a
different kind of grey. And there’s a lot of colour. The colour of the
people, the colour
of the environment, and the colour
of the experience. There is no grey
in my life anymore. ( ♪♪ )
