Updating animal abuse laws

LOOK.. AT UPDATING THEIR ANIMAL ABUSE LAWS. BUT NOW AS KEVIN RADER SHOWS US.. SOME ARE WONDERING IF THE PROPOSAL, WHICH MAY BE ONE OF THE TOUGHEST IN THE COUNTRY, GOES TO FAR. 17 47 125 WHEN THE HAMILTON COUNTY COMMISSIONERS LOOKED FOR SOMEONE TO UPDATE THE ORDINANCES DEALING WITH ANIMAL ABUSE THEY LOOKED NO FURTHER THAN TO THE LOCAL HUMANE SOCIETY. REBECCA STEVENS HAS LED THE HUMANE SOCIETY FOR THE LAST 15 YEARS. “WE NEED TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT AND UNTIL WE INCREASE THE PENALTIES AND DOING MALICIOUS INTENT INVOLVING ANIMALS WE ARE NOT GOING TO SEE A CHANGE.” SO STEVENS IS PROPOSING THE ANIMAL NEGLECT AND CRUELTY FINE GO UP TO $2,500 PLUS JAIL TIME. IT ALSO DEFINES BACKYARD BREEDER AND PUPPY MILL OPERATOR WITH NEW PENALTIES FOR BOTH BUT THE PROPOSED ORDINANCES DO NOT APPLY TO LIVESTOCK ANIMALS. “I AM ALL FOR IT.” HE BELIEVES THE HAMILTON COUNTY ORDINANCES WHICH HAVE NOT BEEN UPDATED SINCE 2008 NEED A CHANGE. “I CAN’T SEE EVER ABUSING THEM. THEY ARE FAMILY IN FACT THEY ARE, BOTH ARE RESCUES.” STEVENS IS MOST PROUD OF THE INCREASED ABUSE PENALTIES. “THE CONSEQUENCES ARE SIGNIFICANTLY STRONGER. YOU FACED UP A A $500 FINE AND WHAT WE ARE PROPOSING IS A $2,500 FINE BASED ON EVENTS AND IN ADDITION YOU COULD FORFEIT YOUR PRIVILEGE TO OWN A PET IN HAMILTON COUNTY.” “THE HAMILTON COUNTY COMMISSIONERS ARE HOPING TO HEAR FROM YOU SEPTEMBER 9TH HERE AT THE JUDICIAL CENTER IN NOBLESVILLE STARTING AT 1:45. IN HAMILTON COUNTY KEVIN RADER CHANNEL THIRTEEN EYEWITNESS NEWS.”
