Pet Dish TV – Captain Kirk: From shelter dog to sheriff dog

On this week’s episode of Pet Dish TV we meet a shelter dog who’s climbed the ranks to become a Minnesota sheriff K9. Hey everyone, I’m Zach and this is Pet Dish TV. Although the majority of animals adopted from Animal Humane Society go on to become loving companions, every so often we see alum go into service. From barn and business cats to service dogs to police K9s We found that shelter animals can do just about anything. Kirk, obviously, was adopted from the Woodbury Humane Society here right in Washington County. From what I understand he’s a rescue dog from Alabama so what we did is we traveled around all the humane societies throughout the Twin Cities here looking for a dog that kind of fits our criteria for drug detection dog. And it just so happened that Kirk was here and we found him and tested him and thought he might work out and took him home and spent two and a half months training with him and now he’s a certified drug detection dog for our agency. With Kirk it was a little different. He’s a little different dog than what I normally I normally work with a Belgian Malinois or a German Shepherd breed so you know just finding what works for Kirk and what his personality is what his likes are and just tailoring our training to his likes and it worked out great once we kind of found his drew. That was actually Sheriff Dan Starry’s idea and he came to me and said, “You know, this is an idea I have,” and normally we purchase our dogs that are bred for police work. He said, “Well let’s try and find a dog that needs a home and see if we can make it happen.” And we started that process and it worked out. So it’s been great working with the Humane Society I came to locations, I spoke to some people, kind of gave an idea what I was looking for and they kept an eye out and it was a couple of months of looking around but we finally found a dog that was going to work for us. This is the first time for our agency, and you know it worked out great so it probably won’t be our last time. AHS alums have gone on to work at the airport volunteer with veterans and provide comfort at schools and senior centers. And they’ve brought love to thousands and thousands of families.
