Jannying – Newfoundland and Labrador Language Lessons

Jannying is another word that we use for
mummering. And mummering is something that
we do during the Christmas season. when you dress up in a whole bunch of found clothes belonging to other people in your family. The perfect mummering costume would have to be long underwear with the trapdoor undone in the back, then I would say you’d have to go for
something like an apron plus the stuffed bra. And then you definitely need
a nice like lacy kind of veil-y thing to cover your face. And you go around from house to house in the community and entertain your friends with some songs and dancing
and then you hopefully get a treat of some kind. Syrup and a cookie if you’re a kid
or probably rum and a cookie if you’re older.
