How to Train a Rottweiler : How to Teach Your Rottweiler to Sit

Hi! I’m Melanie McLeroy with Taurus Training
for Expert Village, and today we’re going to talk about training dogs. So now we’ve
taught this Rottweiler how to pay attention. Now, let’s move on and teach her how to
sit. There are a couple of different ways we can go about it. I was kidding about the
paying attention. She’s totally focused on somebody off camera here. So I’m going
to use the method of getting her attention that actually uses food as a lure, and then
I’m going to use the food as a lure to get her to sit. I’ll lead her nose into the
air and say the word as her rear end is going down, and I’m 95% sure she’s going to
hit the ground with her rear. And then as her bottom hits the ground, I’ll mark it
and then give her a treat. Ursa, good. Now, remember the reason I’m doing this is because
I want to set her up to succeed. If she’s that involved with looking at something else,
I’m setting her up to fail if I say her name without a little extra incentive. Now
I got a free sit there and that’s wonderful. Now I’m going to get her up and work on
teaching her to sit. Good girl, okay. Sit, good, alright that was too easy, since Ursa
is very focused on me: she’s very interested in the food. I’m going to start using another
method of teaching her how to sit, which is simply using my body language to kind of show
her what I want her to do. Okay, sit, good. Now there I get a little bit slower response
because she’s not exactly sure what I’m doing, but if you move forward, that often
causes dogs to lean back and their rear ends hit the ground. So you’re kind of using
serendipity in dog training. Okay, sit, good. Rottweilers are really aware of everything
going on around them, and that’s why they are so good as guard dogs. So, this method
can work really well with a Rottweiler. Oh! She’s interested in the treat again, just
switch hands, okay, sit, good. I’m not going to give her treat every time, remember. Okay,
sit, good. Now be patient I worked with Ursa for a few minutes before we got on camera
and she’s doing extremely well. If this method isn’t working for you, check out
another video and may be use a different method on your Rottweiler. For the time being, Ursa,
good girl, for sitting and paying attention.
