How to Make Shepherd’s Pie

Shepherd’s pie is a hearty casserole
of cooked ground meat, and vegetables. Topped with a fluffy layer of
mashed potatoes. A Great Britain comfort food,
this one dish meal it easy to prepare from ingredients you have on hand. Step One:
Make mashed potatoes. Peel and cut up several potatoes. Boil them for about 20 minutes in
salted water until tender. Mash the potatoes in a bowl with butter,
and any other seasonings you like. Step Two:
Saute the veggies. You can add any vegetable
to shepherd’s pie, but, traditionally it includes
carrots and onions. Heat oil in a large frying pan,
and saute diced onions and carrots until they are cooked through. Step Three:
Cook the meat. Add ground meat to the sauteed
carrots and onions. Shepherd’s pie is traditionally made
with lamb, but ground beef, turkey, chicken, and even fish works too. Saute the meat until it is thoroughly
brown, seasoning along the way with salt, pepper, and your
favorite herbs. For moist and flavorful meat,
add about a half cup of broth, and cook over low heat for about
10 minutes. Some recipes call for a pinch of
thickening agent, like flour, to make the meat mixture
thicker. Step Four:
Add more vegetables. For color and nutrition, sprinkle
a couple handfuls of frozen corn and peas into the meat
mixture. Step Five:
Assemble the Shepherd’s Pie. Spoon the beef and vegetables
into a baking dish. Then spread the mashed
potatoes evenly across on top. Step Six:
Bake for 30 minutes. Bake the Shepherd’s pie in a
400 degree oven for a half hour. Serve Hot! Shepherd’s pie is a warm,
satisfying meal made from common ingredients. It’s the perfect dish to warm up
a cold evening.
