Boy, 7, mauled by pair of Rottweilers

A CHILD IS RECOVERING TONIGHT AFTER POLICE SAY HE WAS ATTACKED BY TWO ROTTWEILERS IN NIAGARA FALLS. THE SEVEN YEAR OLD BOY WAS RUSHED TO WOMEN AND CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL WITH SEVERE INJURIES TO HIS HEAD AND FACE. NEWS FOUR’S DAVE GREBER SPOKE WITH THE LIEUTENANT WHO’S CREDITED WITH SAVING THE BOY’S LIFE, DAVE. THE BOY REMAINS IN THE HOSPITAL TONIGHT, AND HE IS EXPECTED TO SURVIVE, BUT OFFICERS WHO WERE FIRST ON THE SCENE YESTERDAY AFTERNOON WEREN’T COMPLETELY CONFIDENT IN THAT FACT. THE DOG OWNER TOLD ME TODAY SHE THINKS THIS WAS JUST AN ACCIDENT, AND NIAGARA FALLS POLICE AGREE. AND, AS I REPORTED SHORTLY AFTER 5 O’CLOCK, THE DOGS ARE BEING EUTHANIZED THIS EVENING. WHEN NIAGARA FALLS POLICE LEUTENANT JASON SYKES RESPONDED TO THIS HOUSE ON 70TH STREET, HE DIDN’T KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT. ALL HE KNEW IS A BOY HAD BEEN ATTACKED BY A PAIR OF ROTTWEILERS. AND PEOPLE WERE SCREAMING FOR HELP. (( IT’S A PRETTY CHAOTIC EVENT. YOU’VE GOT NEIGHBORS THERE SAYING THEY HEARD SCREAMS FROM THE BACK YARD. SO I WENT UP TO THE FRONT GATE OF THE BACK YARD, IT WAS A FENCED IN PERIMITER, AND I COULD SEE A FEMALE HOLDING BACK A DOG. SHE SEEMED PRETTY EXHAUSTED. )) WITH HIS GUN DRAWN, AND A YOUNG BOY BLEEDING HEAVILY ON THE GROUND, SYKES MADE HIS DECISION. ((I SAW AN OPPORTUNITY. THE DOGS SEEMED DISTRACTED. I ENTERED THE PERIMITTER AND I REMOVED THE CHILD. )) WHEN I WENT THERE TODAY TO SEE IF THE DOG OWNERS WOULD TALK TO ME, I FOUND THIS ROTTWEILER STILL OUTSIDE, WITH TWO OTHERS ON THE PROPERTY. . THE OWNER TOLD US OFF CAMERA SHE THINKS HER DOGS ATTACKED HER COUSIN BY ACCIDENT. POLICE AGREE. (( NO CRIMINAL CHARGES AT THIS TIME. IT SEEMS TO BE JUST AN UNFORTUNATE ACCIDENT. )) LT. SYKES SAID HE TRIED TO MOVE ON TO THE NEXT RESPONSE YESTERDAY AND FINISH HIS OUT HIS SHIFT, BUT THE INCIDENT LEFT HIM SHAKEN. ((IT’S TRAUMATIC, AND YOU KNOW, YOU STRUGGLE WITH IT AFTER THE FACT, AND IT DOES TEAR YOU UP, AND YOU GOTTA DEAL WITH IT. )) HEARING LT. SYKES RETELL THAT STORY, YOU REALIZE JUST HOW FAST HE HAD TO ACT. BETWEEN THE TIME HE ARRIVED, ASSESSED THE SITUATION AND THEN CARRIED THE BOY IN HIS ARMS TO THE AMBULANCE, IT WAS MERE SECONDS. MEANWHILE, THE OWNER TOLD THE SPCA YESTERDAY AFTERNOON AFTER ALL THIS HAPPENED SHE WANTED THE DOGS PUT DOWN. THE AGENCY’S EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR TOLD ME JUST AFTER 5 O’CLOCK SHE WAS WITH THE DOG OWNER TO BEGIN THAT PROCESS.
